CHICAGO, IL — On January 12, 2025, a heartfelt Despedida Party unfolded at the famed Bacolod Restaurant, sending off two prominent figures of the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago: Consul Ryan Gener, Consul for the Economic and Political Section, and Consul Noly Dulay.
The event was attended by community leaders, members of the Filipino-American community, and colleagues who gathered to honor the invaluable contributions of Consuls Gener and Dulay. Speeches were delivered highlighting their tireless dedication to fostering stronger ties between the Philippines and the Midwest region, as well as their efforts in advocating for the welfare of Filipinos in the area. The evening was filled with gratitude, warm camaraderie, and heartfelt goodbyes, making it a memorable send-off for the departing diplomats.

Sponsored by Sir Mariano Santos of Pinoy Newsmagazine and the Knights of Rizal, Central USA, this unique gathering was as much a tribute to these public servants as it celebrated Dr. José Rizal’s enduring heroism. Guests of honor and community members alike reflected on Rizal’s timeless ideals of unity, patriotism, and cultural pride—values that Gener has spent his Chicago tenure advocating.
A Farewell and a New Chapter
As Consul Gener prepares to return to the Philippines alongside Consul Dulay, he leaves behind a legacy of deep commitment, both to the Filipino-American community and to the mission of the Order of the Knights of Rizal (KOR). An active Knight Commander of Rizal (KCR) and former commander of the Maynilad Chapter, he played a pivotal role in igniting local interest in the life and works of the national hero. His leadership saw the organization hosting community lectures, unveiling Rizal memorabilia, and passionately commemorating Rizal’s birth and death anniversaries at Chicago’s own Rizal Monument at Margate Park.
Tracing Rizal’s Footsteps in the U.S.
Consul Gener’s most noteworthy project was researching Dr. Rizal’s 1888 visit to the United States, including his one-day stop in Chicago. Determined to retrace Rizal’s journey, Gener delved into the city’s historical archives, hoping to eventually put up commemorative markers and share this Filipino heritage with younger generations of Filipino Americans. “This is about preserving culture,” Gener shared, “and inspiring second and third-generation Filipino-Americans to connect more deeply with their roots.”
The Knight’s Journey Continues

While Consul Gener heads back home, the work continues: the Knights of Rizal, Central USA plan to ramp up events and projects that keep Rizal’s message alive in the American Midwest. Many in attendance lauded Gener’s dedication, which saw him collaborating with community leaders, sponsoring cultural engagements, and even establishing international monuments commemorating Dr. Rizal—most notably in Lima, Peru.
Looking Ahead
In the spirit of new beginnings, the farewell event served as a call to action for younger leaders. Gener and Dulay encouraged fresh faces to join the Knights of Rizal and build upon what was set in motion. Gener reminded everyone that “one does not have to be in government to serve the Philippines,” echoing Rizal’s call for intellectual and moral courage among Filipinos everywhere.
As Consul Ryan Gener departs Chicago, he leaves a vibrant legacy of cultural advocacy and a challenge for the community to uphold Dr. Rizal’s ideals. His next chapter awaits in the Philippines, but his impact on the Filipino-American community in Chicago—and beyond—remains.
